*** ‘1971-1985: giant sites – big finds’: illustrated talk by Trust director Philip Crummy of the Trust’s work in Colchester from 1971 (part 1)
This review will include the series of very large excavations which the Trust conducted in Colchester town centre in the 1970s and early 1980s and which Philip directed. These produced remarkable new evidence of Roman Colchester. Philip will discuss our excavation at Lion Walk, which led to the discovery of the Roman fortress; our Balkerne Lane site, where the dual carriageway and multi-storey car-park now stand and where we uncovered evidence of the Roman town’s defences; Middleborough, where we lifted the ‘Middleborough mosaic’; Butt Road, where we excavated the remains of the Roman church and about 600 Roman burials; the Gilberd School (now the Sixth Form College), where we excavated the remains of a Roman barrack-block; and Culver Street, where we uncovered evidence of more barrack-blocks and Roman houses.
Philip will present part 2 (‘1986-2016: the Roman circus and much more’) on Saturday 3rd September.
11.30am-12.15pm.
