Heritage Open Day 2017 at the Roman circus visitor centre – come to our ‘finds fest’!

‘… Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,500 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers. Every year for four days in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE …’ (from the Heritage Open Days web-site)

The Heritage Open Days 2017 run from the 7th to the 10th September. A large number of buildings in Colchester will be open to visitors on those days and there will also be special events and activities. On Saturday 9th September, the Trust will be hosting a Heritage Open Day here at the Colchester Roman circus visitor centre!

The activities which we are offering on our Heritage Open Day this year are NOT AS ADVERTISED on the Visit Colchester web-site or in the Colchester Heritage Open Days leaflet for 2017.

The National Trust co-ordinates the Heritage Open Days across Britain, and they say: ‘… This year, from 7-10 September, Heritage Open Days is back to shine a light on England’s fascinating historic places. This annual festival celebrates our diverse history, architecture and culture, offering you the chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences all for free …’.

Our Heritage Open Day
On our Heritage Open Day 2017, the Trust will be presenting a day of Colchester archaeology.
There will be archaeological finds to look at and some to handle, from the prehistoric to the post-medieval periods – a lot of material!
The material will include finds from some of our recent sites, plus some interesting finds from earlier sites, such as:
a large group of very colourful 17th-century vessels and the carbonised Roman foodstuffs from the Williams & Griffin store site and which were excavated in 2015;
pottery from the medieval kiln site at Chesterwell in Mile End, excavated in 2016;
and the remarkable horse hoof bone and Roman horse harness pendant from the site of the Roman circus.
Come and chat to Trust archaeologists and see archaeological finds in close-up!
Most of the material has not been on display before.
There will be children’s activities in our marquee.  Our tea room will be open. There will be guided tours starting at 12 noon and at 1.00 pm (£3 per adult, accompanied children under 16 FREE).
More to be announced!

The Roman circus site, visitor centre and tea room will be open 11.00 am-4.00 pm on our Heritage Open Day. Admission is free!
We provide a number of free car-parking spaces.
The Roman circus site, visitor centre and tea room are pushchair-/wheelchair-accessible.
We look forward to seeing you!
