A rare wooden Roman paddle beautifully preserved

Dig it! exhibition  –  Daily bulletin three of ten.

If you visit our Dig it! exhibition at the Roman Circus Centre, you will be able to see a remarkable wooden Roman paddle. It was discovered during excavations some years ago in the grounds of Colchester Institute. Wooden objects such as this rarely survive in Colchester. However, being close to the River Colne where the water table is high, the paddle lay for almost two thousand years in water-logged ground which is why it survived at all.

The paddle recently returned from York where it was conserved in a specialist conservation laboratory run by the York Archaeological Trust.
