The much-anticipated dig at the Mercury Theatre started today. First find – a lead musket ball from the 1648 Siege of Colchester. Soon we expect to be uncovering floors and foundations of the Roman houses which once stood in the area. Should prove an exciting and very visual excavation. It’s scheduled to last five weeks.
The good news is that we are to have two public open days. They will both be on a Saturday but which ones depends on how the excavation progresses. We plan the second open day right at the very end of the fieldwork so it should be just before Christmas. Dates to be announced here as soon as they have been fixed. Hope to see you soon!
