Our contribution to National Heritage Weekend started today with the internationally famous charioteer Olympus (aka archaeologist Ben Holloway) raising our brand new Circus flag. Two soldiers from Colchester Roman Society were on hand to make sure there was no trouble from the huge crowds which had gathered to enjoy this extraordinary spectacle. Fortunately the flag went up without a hitch and the crowds were well behaved. Couldn’t say the same about the wind though. It didn’t matter though. Among other things, visitors were able to see the displays, visit the starting gates, see the giant modern ‘Roman’ circus mosaic, and have a cup of tea. Same again tomorrow (Sunday), ten until four. Everybody welcome.
