Peter Froste is a professional artist who has collaborated with Trust director Philip Crummy for many years, and produced a large number of artworks in different media for the Trust.
One series of Peter Froste's artworks is published in the Trust's popular book City of Victory: the story of Colchester, Britain's first Roman town. These reconstruction paintings were based on archaeological evidence from Trust excavations at Colchester. Peter has also produced two important reconstruction paintings of the Colchester Roman circus, and his artworks include paintings of other Colchester subjects such as St Botolph's priory, the Gosbecks Romano-British temple and Roman theatre, and the Roman temple and theatre at Colchester. The media range from oil and watercolour paintings to ink drawings. A special treat will be the first public appearance of Peter's latest creation. It's a giant oil painting showing the emperor Claudius at Colchester (Camulodunum) accepting the submission of British kings during the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43.
We use images of Peter Froste's artworks in many ways - in Trust publications, in illustrated talks, in the Roman circus visitor centre, and on our web-site and on social media. Peter also designed our Roman circus modern mosaic.
The exhibition has been brought together to coincide with the completion of the renovation of the Colchester Roman circus modern mosaic - this was designed by Peter and constructed by a large number of volunteers.
[There will be a formal event to mark its completion during the exhibition, date to be announced.]
Admission to the Roman circus visitor centre and tea room is free as always but we are asking for £1.00 per person for admission to the exhibition towards the costs of mounting it and the mini catalogue which visitors will receive on entry.
*** Please note that the exhibition and centre will be open only Tuesdays to Saturdays plus Easter Friday and Easter Monday. ***
