Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club: October ’17 meeting – Roman villas

On Saturday (21st October), the Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) held their October meeting here at the Colchester Roman circus visitor centre. Colchester YAC organiser Barbara Butler writes: ‘… A lively group of 17 members of the Colchester YAC met at the Roman circus visitor centre. We welcomed a new member and all introduced ourselves and our favourite period of history. Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club on site in September ’17

On Saturday (16th September), the Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) met up for their annual archaeological excavation session. Colchester YAC organiser Barbara Butler writes: ‘… Members of the Colchester YAC enjoyed a morning with members of the Colchester Archaeological Group (CAG) on the site of a Roman villa on privately-owned farmland at Fordham near Colchester, which the CAG is currently excavating. When the YAC team of excavators, parents and volunteer leaders arrived, they were given an explanation of the site by Frank Lockwood of the CAG, who showed us geophysical survey and magnetometer survey images of the site. archaeological artworks by young local artist

                      Hannah is one of the Trust’s youngest volunteers, and the daughter of Trust volunteer Wendie. They live in Colchester, not far from the Roman circus centre and our HQ. Hannah is an A-level student at Colchester Institute and, at the end of the summer term, some of her artworks were displayed in an exhibition of students’ work. Four of these are inspired by the remarkable archaeology of Colchester. These are multimedia artworks, which include painted and printed elements on wooden board. new book by Caroline Lawrence includes Colchester Roman circus!

‘Death in the arena’ is the new book of fiction by Caroline Lawrence. It was published in July ’17 by Orion Children’s Books and the Trust has been following it with interest. Caroline is a well-known children’s author who lives in London. Her new series of books – ‘The Roman quests’ – are set in Roman Britain. ‘Death in the arena’ is the third in the series and its story takes place in AD 95. The third and final section of the book – 14 chapters – is set in Roman Colchester. It includes a chapter titled ‘Camulodunum’ (the Iron Age precursor of Colchester: Chapter [read more…]

the Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club – July ’17 meeting

The Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) met here at the Roman circus visitor centre on Saturday 15th for their July meeting. Colchester YAC organiser Barbara Butler writes: ‘… A few weeks ago, the Colchester YAC met up for our July meeting before the school summer holidays. YAC members honed their excavation skills in a sand-pit in preparation for our day helping the Colchester Archaeological Group with their dig at Fordham near Colchester in September. New members were instructed how to use trowels and how to wash the finds. Colchester Roman circus visitor centre is a Children’s University Learning Destination

        The Colchester Archaeological Trust is delighted to say that the Colchester Roman circus site and visitor centre have been included in the Colchester Cultural Trail 2017 as a Learning Destination. The Cultural Trail is part of the Essex Children’s University or CU (Colchester Campus) scheme for children in Essex during the school summer holidays (the image shows the CU logo). The scheme runs from the 29th July to the 20th September 2017. Every school child in Essex has been given an information pack and, last week, we received a copy of the information pack. Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club: June ’17

On Saturday (17th June), the Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) held their June meeting in the Millennium Hall of St Botolph’s church in Colchester. Colchester YAC organiser Barbara Butler writes: ‘… Eighteen YAC members congregated in the Millennium Hall. Seven of them had enjoyed meeting up last weekend at the Colchester Roman circus centre for the Ermine Street Guard event. The YAC had a small static display in the Colchester Archaeological Trust’s archaeology tent at the event. Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club: May 2017 meeting

The Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) met in Colchester Castle park for their May meeting on Saturday (20th May). Colchester YAC organiser BB writes: ‘… Mark Davies, a former curator at Colchester Castle Museum, set a quiz for the YAC. In four teams with five members and a volunteer leader in each team, the young people scoured the park for the answers. One question which intrigued us was the number of descendants attributed to one lady on a memorial… the answer was 367!
